This is a great chance to book Iberia business class with points to/from Toronto and Madrid, with dates available during peak summer season.

Routes: YYZ/MAD

Airline: Iberia

Programs to book with: British Airways, Iberia

Travel timeline: June 2026 to October 2026

Why I like this deal? 1) Great cost, 2) many dates have 2-9+ seats, 3) availability during peak summer travel season

British Airways or Iberia: 41k or 59k points depending on peak or off peak + $130-147 in tax/fees each way. Iberia charges €25 to change or cancel. British Airways charges $55 for changes/cancellations. Note: You may not be able to select seats if you book through BA until check-in.

Tip: Capital One has a 20% bonus to British Airways through 11/21

How to search and book?

To quickly find dates, use the AA award calendar (or just look at dates above or manually search on BA or IB site). However, AA is only getting 1 seat allocated to their program. If there is 1 seat on AA, there should be at least 2 available to book on British Airways or Iberia. Once you find the dates, book directly on Iberia or British Airways.

To search and book with Iberia’s site.

1) On the Iberia site, you must be logged in to search. Put in the destinations (must put in Toronto, not YYZ), choose “Pay with Avios”, and choose “Business” for the cabin, then search.

2) The next screen will show if there is availability. In this example, Iberia is showing Business as bookable.

3) You can choose a mix of Avios points and cash. Personally, I would choose the option on the far left (59k points + $147 as the others are essentially paying down the cash fare at a 2 cent per point rate).

Iberia business class experience

Iberia is using its new A321XLR on the Toronto-Madrid route. This is a narrowbody plane in a 1-1 layout. All business class seats are lie-flat.

Transfer Avios (mostly) freely between 5 major airlines

Aer Lingus, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, and Qatar all use Avios as their points currency. This means you can actually transfer points freely between all five of those programs (with some caveats). A more detailed explanation can be found here (The Points Guy) but you can link multiple Avios-based loyalty accounts on the Avios website.

This is important because a credit card transfer bonus may be to one Avios airline but not another (such as the 40% Citi bonus to Qatar but not to British Airways). But because they can be freely moved around from the five major Avios airlines, you’d want to transfer Citi to Qatar to get the bonus and then move the points to British Airways (or to Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus etc.)

Every credit card program transfers to at least one of these airlines, which then lets you move them to Finnair to book at the best Avios rate (Finnair wants 85k points, British Airways wants 108k points for the same flight, and Qatar wants 155k for that same flight!)

An important caveat is if your Iberia account is less than 90 days old (you should honestly avoid transferring directly to Iberia given their notoriously bad IT and customer service), you cannot move points from Iberia to another Avios program.
